Shooting at a Myrtle Beach Hotel Upsets the Community

25609974_BG3A shooting at the Bermuda Sands Motel on Ocean Boulevard resulted in the deaths of three people and another sustaining injuries.  A witness to the event gave their own version of how the shooting took place. “Somebody fighting in the streets over something that happened in the streets. Somebody told somebody to move out the streets. Basically, that’s what happened, that’s what escalated from the beginning.”

It was approximately 11 p.m. when police responded to a call about a large fight that had broken out near First Avenue North. Before the responding officers were able to reach the location, a man who witnesses described as a large black male dressed in dark pants and a light shirt drew a gun and fired three times. The shots struck Keith Williams.

It’s the belief of the police that after the individuals who took part in the fight, hurried to the motel’s second floor after the shots were fired. It was here that a second offender fired on the crowd. Three of those shots resulted in the loss of three lives.

At this point, police believe the second shooter fled the motel via the rear exit. The victims have been identified as Jamie Williams, 28, Devonte Dantzler, 21, Sandy Gaddis Barnwell, 22. In addition to investigating the fight and the shootings, police arrested two individuals who were involved in the scuffle on charges related to the investigation. The shooting represented one of the five different shootings that took place in various Myrtle Beach locations during a 48 hour period. Myrtle Beach’s Mayor, John Rhodes was upset when he learned of the shooting.

“I don’t know if there’s anything I could say that could satisfy our residents and the business community in our city right now,” said Mayor John Rhodes. He spoke of the need to make Myrtle Beach safer. “I’m fed up with it; I’m mad as hell about it. Something has to be done and whatever we have to do to correct this thing, that’s the direction we’re going in.”

Rhodes hopes the string of shootings during a short period of time doesn’t give people the impression that Myrtle Beach is a violent community. “This is not what happens the rest of the year, so please don’t look at this as something as a habit that happens every week.”

25609974_BG2A video of the shooting was posted to Instagram via an anonymous account. The police stated that they’re aware of that video and would appreciate it if anyone else who has video footage would come forward with it.

“There’s no excuse for there to be so many shooting in such a short period of time,” said Joseph Sandefur, managing partner of Joe and Martin, a top personal injury firm with an office headquartered in Myrtle Beach. “I believe that the city would be much safer if local businesses would realize that they’re responsible for the lives of their customers and invest in proper safety precautions, such as surveillance cameras and professionally trained security teams.

Pediatricians Report Increase in Brain Injuries Due to Playground Falls

0KSM PLAYGROUNDSA disturbing trend has been developing. It turns out that the playground where you assume your child will be able to safely burn off some pent up energy could result in a trip to the local emergency room. The publication, “Pediatrics”, reports that the number of traumatic brain injuries children between the ages of 0 and 14 has drastically increased.

Between 2001 to 2013, it’s estimated that an average of 21,100 children every single year were admitted into emergency rooms across the country with traumatic brain injuries that were sustained while playing at a local playground. The lowest number of emergency room admissions was in 2005 when just 13,720 children sustained a playground related brain injury. The number climbed to a staggering 32,020 emergency room visits in 2012. According to the hospital reports 28% of these injuries were sustained on playground gyms with swing injuries accounting for another 28% of the injuries.

What’s truly alarming about these numbers is that so many playground managers have gone to great lengths to make the space as safe as possible for kids. They’ve done everything from creating softer surfaces to soften the impact if a child falls, to replacing older equipment with less risky equipment. The increase in the number of playground related incidents combined with the safer play areas prompted researchers to take a closer look at the data. In this instance, researchers used the national injury surveillance system to study the ER cases. The information they revealed that there was more to the increase in traumatic brain injuries than just a simple fall from the monkey bars. If are your child victim call car accident lawyer.

It turns out that as a direct result of both the government and insurance companies insisting on more detailed reports regarding emergency room visits, the emergency room doctors have been very careful with their discharge coding. So instead of simply saying that the child was hurt in a fall, like they would have written a few years ago, the doctor now reports that the child bumped their head after falling at the playground.

Another factor that has to be taken into consideration is how much more aware the general public has become regarding the dangers of falls and head injuries. Twenty or even fifteen years ago, a parent might not have though a head getting bumped while their child playing was something that warranted a trip to the emergency room. Now, armed with improved knowledge about the long lasting dangers of concussions, parents will take their child to be checked out no matter how hard their child struck their head, which is smart. There have even been reports about schools refusing to let students attend classes following a fall on the playground until that student has been checked out by a member of the medical community.

“I’m encouraged by the reports indicating that parents, schools, and the medical community are taking head injuries so seriously, and I hope the information means that schools, parks, and community parks continue to be diligent about providing local children with a safe place to play and be kids,” states Drew Warren managing partner of a top personal injury firm with an office headquartered in California.

Motorcycle Death and Injury: A Growing Public Health Concern.

In the early morning hours of Saturday, a woman was killed in an accident on the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge. The accident occurred around 3:20 a.m. on the lower level of the bridge and was Manhattan bound.

Unusually, the accident involved two motorcycles. The drivers of the two motorcycles each had a passenger on the back of their bikes, police said. Officials are still conducting interviews and investigating the events leading up to the crash. However, it is believed that one of the bikes rear-ended the other. It appears that they were both trying to exit the ramp into Manhattan at the time of the accident.

The authorities said, a passenger from the front motorcycle fell off when the two bikes collided, and was tragically ran over by the rear motorcycle. The passenger, a 32-year-old woman from the Bronx, was pronounced dead at the scene. The name of the victim will be released after the family is notified.

The other three people involved in the crash were taken to a nearby hospital and were in stable condition.

The 28 year-old Bronx male that was driving the trailing motorcycle and who ran over the victim was arrested and charged with driving while ability impaired.

Since 2000, Motorcycle-related deaths have increased by 55%. Motorcycle crashes killed 4,502 people in 2010.2 Motorcycle crashes that result in debilitating injuries and deaths is a growing public health concern.

“Our role is to identify ways to prevent injury and death and rigorously check what works and what does not work. For motorcycle safety, the research shows that universal helmet laws are the most effective way to reduce the number of deaths and traumatic brain injuries that result from crashes.” – Dr. Thomas Frieden, CDC Director.

Unless more effective protective measures are enforced, motorcycle-related deaths and traumatic brain injuries are expected to remain at high levels. With motorcycle ownership at an all-time high, enacting the universal helmet law nationwide seems to be the single most effective means of reducing the number of people who get injured or die from motorcycle crashes. Wearing helmets that meet the Department of Transportation (DOT) standard should be mandatory for all riders and passengers.

The proof is in the numbers, helmets reduce the likelihood of death in a motorcycle crash by 37%.23. Helmets saved the lives of 1,544 motorcycle riders in 2010 alone, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimated.

The leading cause of motorcycle crash deaths is traumatic brain injury. But death is not always the result. The victim of a motorcycle crash can also suffer debilitating head injuries. This could mean severe emotional trauma for family and friends and a lifetime of costly rehabilitation. Treating severe traumatic brain injuries costs 13 times more than non-brain injuries. Wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by 69%. Riders who do not wear a helmet are 40% more likely to die from a head injury than someone wearing a helmet.
